Juvenile psych patient dies after being found unresponsive at Md. facility

A patient at a Maryland psychiatric treatment center for juveniles died Tuesday night after being found unresponsive, and officials are investigating the death as a possible suicide, state health officials said Wednesday.

A statement from the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene provided no details on the age or sex of the patient. The patient was found unresponsive at the Regional Institute for Children and Adolescents-Baltimore about 8 p.m. Tuesday. The patient was transferred to a local hospital and pronounced dead at 8:50 p.m.

A delay in issuing federal rules for the increase means that only a handful of states have implemented it.

“The circumstances surrounding the patient’s death indicate possible suicide,” the statement said. The state medical examiner’s investigation is ongoing and no cause of death has been determined.

As required by state law, the patient’s legal guardian was notified, along with local law enforcement. The center is one of two state-operated residential psychiatric treatment facilities for juveniles.
