With the filing deadline for statewide offices looming Tuesday night, Pritzker's bid ensures the Maryland GOP will not be without a candidate for the second cycle in a row.

The party did not put forward a contender for attorney general in 2010, and no others had come forward prior to Monday. Four Democrats are seeking to succeed the current officeholder, Douglas F. Gansler (D), who is running for governor.

“I am excited to put my name in the mix for attorney general and look forward to talking with Maryland voters about this race,” Pritzker said in a statement.

Pritzker, a Baltimore County resident, is a partner with the Towson-based law firm Margolis, Pritzker, Epstein & Blatt, P.A. He received his undergraduate degree from Franklin & Marshall College in 1970 and his law degree from the University of Maryland in 1974, according to a news release issued by the Maryland Republican Party.

“I have been actively recruiting candidates to run and the Maryland Republican Party could not have found a more qualified and respected lawyer to run for this position,” said Diana Waterman, chairwoman of the Maryland GOP.

Pritzker unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for attorney general in 2002.
