Md. Gov. O’Malley gets a surprise party a week before his 50th birthday

By ,

Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D), who turns 50 next week, was treated to an early birthday celebration Friday night.

The surprise party in the governor’s mansion in Annapolis was pulled together by first lady Catherine Curran O’Malley and the couple’s children, according to a participant.

Attendees included family and friends and a small number of current and former staff members.

The governor, who fronts a semi-retired Celtic rock band, wound up providing a little live entertainment for the guests, an aide said.

O’Malley gained political prominence as a brash young mayor of Baltimore, an office he assumed at age 36.

He turns 50 on Friday. Other gatherings are expected to mark the occasion between now and then.
