N. Virginia student killed in Norfolk

A 20-year-old college student from Northern Virginia was shot and killed Friday in the house where he lived near the campus of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, authorities said.

They said Christopher S. Cummings, a junior, was found fatally shot in an incident in which a fellow student was seriously wounded. Cummings came from the Woodbridge area and was a graduate of Forest Park High School.

Norfolk police said Saturday that they knew of no motive and had no suspect.

ODU President John R. Broderick described Cummings in a statement as a criminal justice major and Theta Chi fraternity member.

“Christopher was a friendly and popular student,” the statement said. “Words cannot express our grief at the senseless loss of such a bright, young man.”

A woman who lives near the Cummings family in Prince William County called him “a really good kid.” The university’s description was “entirely accurate,” she said. “He was a bright, outgoing, wonderful young man.”

Norfolk police spokeswoman Karen Parker-Chesson said that Cummings died shortly after 5 a.m. in the house where he was found, she said.

The street is near the eastern edge of the ODU campus. Parker-Chesson said robberies have been reported in that area in the past.

In his statement, ODU’s president cited efforts to bolster security on and off campus.

“We will also continue to urge city officials and landlords on additional safety measures for the off-campus neighborhood where this and other crimes occurred this semester,” he said.
