Baker chosen to lead national organization

Prince George’s County Executive Rushern L. Baker III (D) will become the new leader of a national organization of city and county government officers.

He will follow his Montgomery County counterpart, Isiah Leggett (D), as president of the County Executives of America.

Baker was elected this week by the group at a meeting at the National Association of Counties conference in New Orleans. He will serve a two-year term.

VIRGINIA
Bus rapid transit
coming to suburbs

Bus rapid transit will start soon in the heavily congested Route 1 corridor in Arlington County and Alexandria, from Crystal City to the Braddock Road Metro station.

Arlington officials broke ground Friday morning for their portion of the transitway.

Officials in Alexandria said the buses will start operating Aug. 24 between the Potomac Yard Shopping Center and the Braddock Road Metro.
