John D. Herman, Bethesda doctor

John D. Herman, 83, an internist who owned and operated a private practice in Bethesda from 1963 to 1995, died March 11 at Casey House hospice in Rockville. He had pneumonia.

John David Herman was born in Sioux City, Iowa, and grew up in Fargo, N.D. He was a 1947 graduate of Wake Forest University in North Carolina and a 1951 graduate of its medical school. He served in the Navy Medical Corps during the Korean War.

He had a private practice in Washington before opening his Bethesda practice. He lived in Rockville.

His first wife, the former Mary Ann Ernest, died in 1986.

Survivors include his wife of nine years, Leslie Jones Herman of Rockville; three children from his first marriage, John D. Herman III of Marietta, Ga., Dr. Robert S. Herman of Brookeville and Betsy Ann Schrauth of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; a brother; and four grandchildren.
