Jeffrey W. Bier, 68, a microbiologist with the Food and Drug Administration from 1972 to 2000, died April 2 at Inova Alexandria Hospital of pneumonia.
Dr. Bier conducted research on the detection, health hazards and mitigation of food-borne protozoan and parasites. He co-edited three books on food-borne pathogens, published more than 35 research papers and contributed to FDA publications on food-handling safety.
Jeffrey Webster Bier was born in Detroit and finished high school in Decatur, Ga. He graduated in 1965 from Roanoke College in Virginia and served in the Army in Vietnam with a medical evacuation unit. Afterward, he received a master’s degree and a doctorate, both in biology, from Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa.
His memberships included the Helminthological Society of Washington, a scientific organization for parasitological research. He was a volunteer at the Carpenter’s Shelter for the homeless in Alexandria.
His hobbies included home remodeling. He had homes in Alexandria and Virginia’s Chincoteague Island.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Mary Ann Anapliotes Bier of Alexandria; two daughters, Alexandra Castro of Alexandria and Eleanor Binder of Wilber, Neb.; and four grandchildren.
