John E. Osborn, U-Md. professor

John E. Osborn, 74, a retired University of Maryland mathematics professor, died May 30 at the Rockville Nursing Home of complications from neurosurgery. He lived in Potomac.

Dr. Osborn had been on the U-Md. faculty since 1965 and chaired the mathematics department from 1982 to 1985.

His research specialty was numerical analysis of partial differential equations. He also developed an expertise in determining the extent of inherent numerical errors in computer applications used in mathematical formulations.

Dr. Osborn published widely and was a leader in introducing technology in undergraduate mathematics courses.

He retired in 2008 but continued to work on research projects at the university until his death.

John Edward Osborn was born in Onamia, Minn., and received bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in mathematics from the University of Minnesota. He received his PhD in 1965.

He was a member of the First Baptist Church of the City of Washington and held the position of life deacon.

Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Janice Matson Osborn of Potomac; three children, Nancy Kelly of North Potomac, Kevin Osborn of Crawfordsville, Ind., and Michael Osborn of Evanston, Ill.; a sister; and eight grandchildren.
