Alois Bruckbauer, 64, a German musician and singer who was also a chauffeur at the German Embassy in Washington, died Jan. 14 at the Potomac Valley nursing home in Rockville.

He had encephalopathy, a brain disorder he developed after a head injury, his wife, Karen Bruckbauer, said.

Mr. Bruckbauer, a resident of Chevy Chase, came to the Washington area in 1977 as a security official for what was then the West German Embassy.

He returned to Germany briefly and came back to the United States to join the embassy’s support staff. He worked chiefly as a chauffeur for military officers and retired because of his illness in 2006.

Alois Bruckbauer was born in Rosenheim, Germany. He worked as a blacksmith and border officer before coming to Washington.

Mr. Bruckbauer was a singer, guitarist and yodeler who performed for more than 25 years in the Washington area, mostly at German restaurants, including Old Europe and the old Wurzburg-Haus. He was a member of Bavarian dance and musical groups in the Washington area.

His first marriage, to Edeltraud Hagdorn, ended in divorce.

Survivors include his wife of 26 years, Karen Poelsterl Bruckbauer of Chevy Chase; a son from his first marriage, Thomas Bruckbauer of Munich; a brother; and two grandchildren.
