Ann D. Schmidt, journalist

Ann D. Schmidt, 85, who was a Washington correspondent for newspapers in Colorado for more than 30 years, died Feb. 10 at her home in the District.

She had complications from a stroke, her son Gregory Schmidt said.

Mrs. Schmidt began her journalism career in Colorado with the University Park News. After moving to Washington in the mid-1960s, she began reporting for the Denver Post.

Along with her reporting work, she also had a weekly column that appeared in the Post as well as in the Longmont Times-Call and Loveland Daily Reporter-Herald. Occasionally, she wrote articles for the Colorado Statesman. She retired in the late 1990s.

Dorothy Ann Downing was born in Denver and was a 1947 drama graduate of Carleton College in Northfield, Minn.

Her memberships included the White House Correspondents Association, the National Press Club and the Cosmos Club.

Her husband of 56 years, Richard Schmidt Jr., died in 2004. Their son Rolf Schmidt died in 1972.

Survivors include three children, Gregory Schmidt and Heidi Van Genderen, both of Washington, and Eric Schmidt of Beaverton, Ore.; two brothers; and six grandchildren.
