Dean H. Martin, Northern Virginia physician, dies at 87

Dean H. Martin, an obstetrician-gynecologist who practiced for almost four decades in Northern Virginia, died Feb. 7 at his home in McLean, Va. He was 87.

The cause was congestive heart failure, said his daughter, Jane Martin.

Dr. Martin opened a medical practice in McLean in 1957 and delivered at least 3,000 babies, according to his family. He retired in 1995.

Dean Harrington Martin was born in Washington and graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School. He graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1948 and from George Washington University medical school in 1952.

He served in the Air Force and did a medical internship in Baltimore. He was a fellow of the American College of Surgeons and was a clinical professor of medicine emeritus at George Washington University.

Dr. Martin’s volunteer work included providing free clinical services at Inova Fairfax Hospital.

His wife of 48 years, Carolyn Calvert Martin, died in 1998.

Survivors include two children, Jane A. Martin of Arlington County and Keith C. Martin of McLean; a brother, Roger A. Martin of Bethesda; and four grandchildren.
