Evelyn W. Pickett, 86, who worked for five decades in various capacities for the Bureau of Indian Affairs, died July 28 at her home in Warrenton.
She had cardiac arrest, said her daughter, Regan Pickett.
Mrs. Pickett, a member of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, retired from the Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1994 as a public information officer. During her time with the agency, she did field work in Oklahoma and collaborated with the National Tribal Chairmen’s Association and the National Council on Indian Opportunity.
During the Kennedy administration, she worked on a task force formed to review the needs of Native Americans nationwide.
Evelyn Jane Wofford was born in Christie, Okla. In 1944, she received an associate’s degree in business from what is now Haskell Indian Nations University in Lawrence, Kan.
She belonged to Literacy Volunteers of the National Capital Area and Mensa.
Her marriages to Edmond “Hoyt” Massey and William “Pete” Pickett ended in divorce. Survivors include a daughter from her second marriage, Regan Pickett of Warrenton; and a granddaughter.
