Helen J. Harwood, school nurse, dies at 79

Helen J. Harwood, a nurse who worked for Montgomery County Public Schools in the 1970s and ’80s, died Jan. 21 at Montgomery Hospice’s Casey House in Rockville. She was 79.

The cause was liver cancer, said her son Kevin Harwood.

Mrs. Harwood worked at schools throughout the county, mainly in the Rockville area, where she was a longtime resident. She also taught water safety through the American Red Cross and volunteered with the Girl Scouts.

Helen Elizabeth Johnston was born in Bogalusa, La., and grew up in New Rochelle, N.Y. She received a nursing degree from Keuka College in Keuka Park, N.Y., in 1955 and settled in Montgomery County in the early 1960s.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Robert K. Harwood of Silver Spring, Md.; three children, Kent Harwood of Fort Myers, Fla., Kevin Harwood of Gaithersburg, Md., and Helen Raab of Cedar Park, Tex.; a sister; a brother; and five grandchildren.
