Helen L. Madara, 90, who retired in 1981 as an assistant principal of the old Ritchie Elementary school in Forestville, died Oct. 12 at her daughter’s home in Fulton.

She had congestive heart failure, said her daughter, Patricia Madara.

Mrs. Madara became an assistant principal at Ritchie in the 1970s. She began teaching fourth grade at Rogers Heights Elementary School in Bladensburg in 1963.

Helen Ruth Leibrand was born in Buffalo Center, Iowa, and raised in Washington. She was a 1937 graduate of Eastern High School and worked as a secretary for the Social Security Administration in the 1940s.

She received a bachelor’s degree in 1967 and a master’s degree in 1970, both in education, from the University of Maryland.

She lived in Hyattsville for many years before moving to Sarasota, Fla., in retirement.

Her husband of 35 years, James Madara, died in 1979. Survivors include two children, Patricia Madara of Fulton and David Madara of Laurel; two sisters; and two grandsons.
