Hope Barrett, 78, an information specialist at the federal Consumer Product Safety Commission from 1984 to 2002, died Feb. 6 at Inova Alexandria Hospital. She had idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, her daughter Cheryl Hutchison said.

Hope Lydia Schmidt was a native Washingtonian and a 1951 graduate of Eastern High School. She graduated in 1955 from Wilson Teachers College in the District.

She married in 1957 and accompanied her husband on his Air Force assignments before settling in the Washington area in 1979. She was an Alexandria resident. Her memberships included the Daughters of the American Revolution.

Survivors include her husband, retired Col. Michael J. Barrett Jr. of Alexandria; three children, Valerie Crowther of San Antonio, retired Air Force Lt. Col. Michael Barrett III of Warner Robins, Ga., and Cheryl Hutchison of Aldie; a sister, Jean S. Bartley of Alexandria; a brother, retired Army Col. Herbert R. “Ray” Schmidt of Springfield; and seven grandchildren.
