Irene Mee, Labor Dept. official

Irene Mee, 83, who worked for the Labor Department from 1974 to 1998 and retired as a Denver-based regional director, died Sept. 21 at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital in Rockville after an apparent heart attack. She was a Gaithersburg resident.

The death was confirmed by her daughter Robin Mee.

From 1998 to 2008, Mrs. Mee was a recruiter for her daughter’s Glen Echo-based executive search firm, Mee Derby & Co.

Mrs. Mee helped set up training programs for the federal War on Poverty effort in the late 1960s. From 1971 to 1974, she was executive director of the Fairfax Community Action Program, a nonprofit anti-poverty agency.

Ruth Irene Nichols was a native of Willoughby, Ohio, and a 1951 graduate of Ohio State University.

Her husband, James I. Mee III, whom she married in 1954, died in 1973.

Survivors include three children, Robin Mee of Cabin John, J. Steven Mee of Lakewood, Colo., and Sarah Mee of Germantown; a sister; and five grandsons.
