Jane Shaffran, church volunteer

Jane Shaffran, 76, who taught Sunday school and volunteered at St. Barnabas’ Episcopal Church in Annandale for 40 years, died April 18 at her home in Fairfax City. She had lung cancer.

At the church, Mrs. Shaffran edited the newsletter, oversaw weekly ceremonies and sang in the choirs.

Jane Carolyn Ward was an Oklahoma City native and attended Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va., Old Dominion University in Norfolk and George Washington University.

Her husband of 56 years, retired Air Force Col. SJ Shaffran, died in 2010.

Survivors include two children, Anne Lorber of Charlottesville and James Shaffran of Annandale; a sister, Anne Brossy of Burke; and two grandchildren.
