John Konrad, 43, the vice president and general manager of WGTS-FM (91.9), a contemporary Christian music station owned by Washington Adventist University, died Jan. 2 at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. He had bilateral pneumonia of unknown origin, said his father, Albert Konrad.
John Edward Konrad was born in Hinsdale, Ill., and graduated in 1987 from Takoma Academy, a private school affiliated with the Seventh-day Adventist Church. He was a 1994 graduate of Washington Adventist University in Takoma Park.
Mr. Konrad spent virtually his entire career at WGTS and became general manager in 1996. A year later, he was instrumental in switching the station’s format from classical music to contemporary Christian.
Under the new format, the station grew from 10,000 weekly listeners to more than 600,000. WGTS ranks among the top 10 radio stations in the Washington market.
Mr. Konrad was a Mount Airy resident and a member of New Hope Seventh-day Adventist Church in Fulton.
In addition to his father, of Queenstown, Md., survivors include his wife of 18 years, Dawn Cofield Konrad, and an adopted adult daughter, Marina Konrad, both of Mount Airy; his mother, Johna Mason of Columbia; and a sister.
