Joyce Oppel, Fairfax County teacher

Joyce Oppel, 72, a substitute teacher in Fairfax County public schools from 1993 to 1997, died April 28 at her home in Fairfax County after a seizure.

Mrs. Oppel married in 1964 and accompanied her husband on his Air Force and Foreign Service assignments before settling in the Washington area in 1980. Early in her career, she taught elementary school in North Carolina and was a ballet instructor in Michigan and Colorado.

Joyce Prange was a native of East Grand Rapids, Mich., and a 1960 elementary education graduate of Michigan State University.

Her memberships included Fairfax United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, retired Air Force Col. Bernard F. Oppel of Fairfax County; three children, Kathryn Antonides of Burke, Anne Carroll of Fredericksburg, Va., and Laura Henderson of Crozet, Va.; a brother; and 13 grandchildren.
