Margaret M. Jay, shopkeeper, dies at 89

Margaret M. Jay, who ran the Pat Arnolde’s Talls women’s clothing store at Tysons Corner Center mall from 1968 until her retirement in 1978, died Jan. 15 at the Greenspring Village senior living community in Springfield, Va. She was 89.

The cause was complications from kidney disease, said her son Bruce W. Jay.

Margaret Mary Shatkus was born in Chicago, where she began her career in women’s fashion as a buyer for a department store. Beginning in the late 1940s, she accompanied her husband on Foreign Service postings in Ireland, Poland, Germany, Colombia and Mexico.

She settled in McLean in 1967 and was a member of the Soroptimist women’s volunteer organization and the McLean Woman’s Club.

Her husband of 56 years, Anthony J. Jay, died in 2001.

Survivors include three children, Anthony J. Jay Jr. of Springfield, Bruce W. Jay of McLean and Alexandra Jay Cochran of Miramar Beach, Fla.; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
