Margaret O’Malley Kral, founding church member

Margaret O’Malley Kral, 88, a founding member of St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Springfield and a former president of the Women’s Club of Springfield, died Nov. 21 at Renaissance Gardens at Greenspring in Springfield.

She had respiratory failure, her daughter Kathleen Kral said.

Margaret Cecilia “Peggy” O’Malley was born in Media, Pa. Her family moved to Washington when she was an infant. She a lifelong resident of the area, having grown up in the Swampoodle and Woodbridge neighborhoods of Northeast Washington. She was a 1941 graduate of Notre Dame Academy.

In Springfield, Mrs. Kral was a 50-year parishioner at St. Bernadette Church. She was a leader of the church’s seniors group and president of the women’s sodality.

She was a former president of the Arlington Diocesan Council of Catholic Women and participated in various educational and spiritual enrichment programs.

Mrs. Kral was president of the Women’s Club of Springfield in 1987 and 1988. She was a volunteer reader to children at Crestwood Elementary School and also volunteered at the Springfield Swimming and Racquet Club.

In 1949, she married Louis M. Kral. He died in 2002.

Survivors include seven children, Kathleen Kral of Jacksonville, Fla., Kevin Kral of Bend, Ore., Karen Kral of Newark, Del., Kenneth Kral of Raleigh, N.C., Keith Kral of Stockholm, Kristine Kral of Washington and Kent Kral of Woodbridge; and four grandchildren.
