Patti Shafer, environmental management consultant

Patti Shafer, 58, an environmental management consultant with SRA International, died of lung cancer March 27 at the Bethany Beach, Del., home of her companion, Art Achilles. Her death was confirmed by Colleen Morgan, a friend and co-worker.

For about 20 years, Ms. Shafer had been with SRA and the Marasco Newton Group, which was acquired by SRA 10 years ago. Much of her work involved contracting and consulting with the Environmental Protection Agency.

Patti Ann Shafer was born in Passaic, N.J., and moved to the Washington area in 1971 to attend the University of Maryland. She received a bachelor’s degree in special education in 1975 and an MBA in finance from Maryland in 1984.

She began her environmental consulting career with the Synectics Group in 1982 and later worked for Weston Solutions. Her specialties included safe drinking water.

She lived in the District and enjoyed dancing and reading.

Survivors include her partner of nine years, Art Achilles of Bethany Beach, and a brother.
