Robert Freund, an IBM project manager who had worked for the company for four decades, died Jan. 14 at his home in Germantown, Md. He was 64.

His death was confirmed by his wife, Jill Freund, who said the cause was pneumonia. Mr. Freund had a heart transplant in 2008.

Mr. Freund joined IBM in 1967, and his assignments over the years included managing a team of software developers designing automation systems.

Robert John Freund was born in Chicago. He served in the Army from 1969 to 1971, including a posting in Germany, and settled in Germantown in 1984. Mr. Freund belonged for three decades to the Rockville Assembly of God, where he served on the board of deacons and did extensive volunteer work, his wife said.

His marriage to the former Toni Zabinski ended in divorce. Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Jill Krammes Freund of Germantown; two children from his first marriage, Shannon Davis of Oklahoma City and Jeremy Freund of Frederick, Md.; three children from his second marriage, Matthew Freund of Frederick, Stacia King of Tulsa and Stephen Freund of Germantown; three sisters; two brothers; and two grandchildren.
