Robert J. Esposito, architect

Robert J. Esposito, 65, an architect who was formerly director of facilities at the University of Maryland, died Jan. 9 at Calvert Memorial Hospital in Prince Frederick.

He had lung cancer, his legal representative, Kim DiGiovanni Aluisi, said.

Mr. Esposito, who lived in Laurel for many years before moving to Lusby in 2007, came to the Washington area in 1974. He was director of facilities at U-Md. until 1985 and occasionally lectured at the university on architecture.

From 1985 to 1993, he operated a District-area architecture firm with Joseph Celentano. Mr. Esposito was the sole proprietor of his own architecture and planning firm, RJE, AIA, from 1993 to 2011.

Robert Joseph Esposito was born in Passaic, N.J., and was a 1968 graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y., with a bachelor’s degree in building science. He received a second bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree, both in architecture, from RPI in 1969 and 1970, respectively.

He worked in architecture and planning in upstate New York before moving to the Washington area. He was a member of many architecture and construction organizations.

His marriages to Nancy Esposito and Carla Van Luven Esposito ended in divorce. Survivors include a daughter from his second marriage, Ariana S. Esposito of Laurel; and a brother.
