Robert L. Burchett, 77, a retired partner of the law firm of Miller, Miller and Canby in Rockville, died of cardiac arrest Jan. 19 at a hospital in Greenville, S.C. He was a Potomac resident and was visiting a son in South Carolina when he died.
The death was confirmed by his wife, Cheryl “Sherry” Burchett.
Mr. Burchett spent two years working for the Montgomery County attorney’s office before joining Miller, Miller and Canby in 1966. He became a partner in 1969 and retired in 1998. He was a member of the Maryland Attorney Grievance Commission and served on panels of the Montgomery County Bar Association.
Robert Lester Burchett was born in Frederick, where he graduated from St. John’s Catholic Prep in 1952. He then served two years in the Army in Korea. He was a 1959 graduate of the University of Maryland and a 1962 graduate of its law school.
His avocations included fishing, boating and hunting.
His first marriage, to Janet Stewart, ended in divorce. Survivors include his wife of 15 years, Cheryl Homer “Sherry” Burchett of Potomac; two sons from his first marriage, Bill Burchett of Rockville and John Burchett of Greenville; a stepson, Heath Homer of Frederick; and seven grandchildren.
