Vivian Nielsen, 86, a past president of the D.C. Baptist Convention who held leadership roles nationally and locally with Baptist women’s groups, died Jan. 4 at the Greenspring retirement community in Springfield. She had cancer.
A daughter, Carol Adams, confirmed the death.
Mrs. Nielsen was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Washington, where she helped start a ministry that hosts patients from St. Elizabeths, the District’s psychiatric hospital, for social activities and recreational therapy.
Vivian Leola Lee was born in Ansley, Neb., and she lived in Nebraska and Colorado before settling in the Washington area in 1963. She moved to the retirement community from Arlington County in 2003.
She was an officer in the Glencarlyn Civic Association in Arlington and served for 27 years as an election officer in the county’s Glencarlyn precinct.
Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Aldon D. Nielsen of Springfield; four children, Carol Adams of Sacramento, Aldon L. Nielsen of State College, Pa., and Santa Barbara, Calif., Dennis L. Nielsen of Adelphi and Brian Nielsen of Washington; a brother; a sister; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
