Willie W. Flood, Baptist minister

Willie W. Flood, who served as the minister of Southeast Tabernacle Baptist Church in Washington for more than 50 years, died May 28 at his home in the District. He was 96.

He had lung cancer, said his son Samuel Flood.

Rev. Flood began serving as the minister at Southeast Tabernacle in 1959. In addition to his duties at the church, he owned and operated several supermarkets in the District and also worked at a Giant Foods warehouse in Landover, stocking produce.

Willie William Flood was born in Calhoun County, S.C., and moved to the Washington area in the late 1930s. During the 1940s, he worked at the U.S. Government Printing Office and what is now part of the Washington Hospital Center.

His wife of 66 years, Elaine Howard Flood, died in 2008. Survivors include five children, Samuel Flood of Chevy Chase, Michael Flood and Gloria McCullough, both of Silver Spring, and Willie J. Flood and Daryl Flood, both of Washington; two sisters; 11 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
