Partial wall collapse on New York Avenue NW ; part of roadway shut down

June 10

Part of a wall collapsed at a house under construction on New York Avenue NW Tuesday evening, prompting evacuations of neighboring buildings, and a partial road closure, authorities said.

No injuries were reported in the collapse, which occurred in the 100 block of New York Avenue NW.

The collapse was caused by a basement excavation, said a spokesman for the D.C. Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs. Timothy J. Wilson, a spokesman for the D.C. Fire Department, said the building was under construction.

Neighboring buildings did not appear to be compromised, but their residents were being evacuated “out of caution,” said the DCRA spokesman, Matt Orlins.

Authorities said westbound lanes of New York Avenue would be closed overnight, but one or two might reopen for the Wednesday morning rush hour.
