Pedestrian killed on median in Montgomery

May 18, 2013

A woman walking on the raised median of a busy road in Montgomery County was killed this week when a collision knocked a vehicle onto the curb, county police said.

They said Mary Josephine Fish, 52, of Beltsville was struck Thursday on the median of Veirs Mill Road near Georgia Avenue in Wheaton. She died of her injuries Friday, the police said.

They said a car and a van were going south on Veirs Mill about 9 a.m. when the driver of the car made a lane change from the middle lane to the left lane just before the intersection with Georgia. A van that was in the left lane was struck by the car, the police said.

They said the impact knocked the van over the curb and onto the median where the woman was struck, police said. She died at a hospital.

Police said they are still investigating.

A narrow median that runs along Veirs Mill widens just before Georgia to include a sidewalk. It was not clear exactly where the woman was on the median.
