The Shad Planking dates to the 1930s, when a small group of friends gathered to celebrate the migratory running of the shad in the James River.
Henry E. Howell Jr., right, then the lieutenant governor of Virginia, talks with Mills E. Godwin Jr. at the Shad Planking in 1973. Godwin was governor of Virginia from 1966 to 1970 and 1974 to 1978. The planking began as a gathering of a group of friends at Wrenn's Mill in Isle of Wight County, in the Hampton Roads area, during the spring running of the shad.
