2 arrests in separate fatal shootings in Prince George’s

A 32-year-old man was fatally shot Thursday night in the Temple Hills-Hillcrest Heights area, Prince George’s County police said. They also identified a man who was fatally shot earlier Thursday.

Arrests were made in both cases, police said late Friday.

In the later shooting, police said, Gregory L. Lawton Jr. was killed about 9:30 p.m. near his home in the 4400 block of 23rd Parkway. His body was found in a building entrance, they said.

Police said a preliminary investigation indicated that Lawton had been in a neighborhood dispute with someone who produced a handgun and fired.

Police said James A. Payne, 29, who was charged with murder in a warrant, turned himself in Friday night.

In the first incident, police said the man slain on Victory Lane in the Suitland area about 4:20 a.m. was Kyree E. Simms of Martin Luther King Avenue SE in the District. A 20-year-old man was critically hurt in the incident, police said, as was an 18-year-old woman.

Police said Brian Hinkle, 32, of the 5200 block of Fourth Street NW was arrested and charged with murder in Simms’s death.
