Hillwood Square, a 19.2-acre Falls Church housing cooperative, is attractive to developers because of its size and location inside the Capital Beltway. A Colorado-based company has offered $38 million for the property, but among residents — some of whom are negotiating prices for their units in the close-knit community while others want to preserve it — there is little consensus on what to do next.
Patricia Hickerson, 68, stands outside the back door of her home in Hillwood Square, where she has lived for more than 61 years. "I've never had a mortgage, I have never had an apartment, so I don't know what I am going to do," Hickerson said of the potential sale of the community to apartment developers, Archstone-Smith.
