A Salisbury University student remained in critical condition Wednesday after she was shot near the Eastern Shore campus by her ex-boyfriend, who then fatally wounded her friend and himself, police said.
Officers were called Tuesday evening to the student’s home on Onley Road in Salisbury, where they found the shooter, Ryan Justin Shallue, and the two victims, police said.
Police said Shallue, 21, was a former boyfriend of Kristen Renee Loetz, 20, the Salisbury student. Both had lived in Stevensville in Queen Anne’s County. Police said Shallue went to Loetz’s home, where they argued, and that Charles Jacob Abbott, 19, of Hebron tried to intervene.
Shallue pulled out a semiautomatic handgun and shot Loetz and Abbott before shooting himself. Shallue was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Abbott was taken to a hospital in Salisbury, where he was pronounced dead. Loetz was taken to the same hospital, but then she was flown to Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore.
Janet Dudley-Eshbach, president of the university, issued a statement that said the two people who had died in the incident were not students.
“Our prayers and condolences go out to the families and friends of those impacted by last evening’s tragic off-campus shooting,” she said in a letter to students Wednesday. “Sadly, relationship violence is a national issue and our campus is not immune to it.”
Loetz is an honors nursing major who is active in student life, Dudley-Eshbach said.
