Season’s first freeze recorded at Dulles

By ,

The temperature at Dulles International Airport fell below freezing Saturday for the first time this season and matched a record for cold weather in a year that has become known for warmth.

The mercury at Dulles dropped to 30 degrees at 6:33 a.m., according to the National Weather Service, equaling the Oct. 13 record set in 1988.

Daylight is dwindling, the leaves are turning and winter is coming, but 30 degrees on Oct. 13 is uncommon. It was 15 degrees below the normal low temperature at Dulles for the date.

At Reagan National Airport, the temperature fell no lower than 41 degrees, 10 above the record set in 1906 but 11 degrees below normal.

Meanwhile, this month could snap the string of 11 consecutive months of above-normal temperatures at National. So far the month’s average there is more than 12 degrees below normal.
