First lady: Michelle Obama is scheduled to visit Children’s National Medical Center in Washington on Friday afternoon.

“The Hobbit”: “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” director Peter Jackson’s take on the classic work by J.R.R. Tolkien, opens Friday.

Washington Wizards: The Wizards play the Los Angeles Lakers at the Verizon Center Friday at 7 p.m.

Gift Cards for Guns: Police in Prince George’s County will collect guns in exchange for gift cards Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Laurel.
