Man fatally shot by two officers outside Montgomery County restaurant

Montgomery County police shot and killed a man Wednesday after he brandished a handgun outside a restaurant in Sandy Spring, county police said.

The man first showed the gun in an outdoor dining area attached to Urban Bar-B-Que, at 805 Olney Sandy Spring Rd., according to Capt. Paul Starks, a police spokesman. Starks said a manager asked the man to leave the patio because the gun was frightening customers. When the man refused to leave, the manager called police about 4:30 p.m., Starks said.

Three police officers arrived to find the man sitting alone on the patio with his weapon visible, Starks said. The spokesman said that it was not yet clear how the situation escalated but that the man “may have attempted to fire” at the officers.

Two of the officers responded by firing their weapons at the man, described as possibly in his 60s, Starks said. The man, who was not identified, was pronounced dead at a hospital, Starks said.

Both officers who fired their weapons have been placed on paid administrative leave, pending an investigation, Starks said. The officers, whom Starks declined to identify, are a sergeant with 17 years of experience and an officer with five years’ experience.

Kevin Berry, the manager on duty at Urban Bar-B-Que on Wednesday night, declined to comment. The restaurant closed after the incident, but a staff member said it would be open Thursday.
