Police ID victims in fatal Gaithersburg crash

Montgomery County police have identified the victims of a Thursday morning crash in Gaithersburg.

Police said Sunday that Shayne R. Johnson, 24, of Gaithersburg, was killed in the crash. Jean Marie Pollard, 28, of Silver Spring was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The July 4th incident happened about 1:30 a.m. on East Diamond Avenue. An SUV overturned after hitting a utility pole, a bus stop shelter, a tree, a fire hydrant and a pole support cable, according to police.

Both occupants of the car were thrown from the vehicle, police said. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. Pollard is being treated at a local hospital, police said.

The incident happened after an officer tried to stop the driver for failing to dim the vehicle’s high-beam headlights. The driver sped away from the officer, ran a red light and ran off the roadway, according to police.

Montgomery County police have not released information about who was driving the vehicle. They said the crash remains under investigation.
