How the new system stacks up, in commuting time and fare costs

Wondering whether switching to the new Silver Line will save you time or money on your commute? We did some

Fairfax County to Metro Center

Old: Bus to West Falls Church Metro station and Orange Line

Fairfax Connector: Route 950 from the Herndon-Monroe Park
and Ride to the West Falls Church station — 22 minutes, $1.75 boarding fare with SmarTrip card

Metrorail: 22 minutes, $4.10 with SmarTrip

Total cost: $5.35 ( including a
50-cent discount for making bus-rail connection with SmarTrip)

Total time in transit: 44 minutes

New: Bus to Wiehle-Reston East Metro station and Silver Line

Fairfax Connector: Revised Route 950 from Herndon-Monroe to
Wiehle-Reston East Metro station — 10 minutes, $1.75 with SmarTrip

Metrorail: 41 minutes, $5.90 with SmarTrip

Total cost: $7.15 (including a
50-cent discount for making bus-rail connection with SmarTrip)

Total time in transit: 51 minutes

Old: Car to West Falls Church and Orange Line

Parking: $4.85 all day

Metrorail: 22 minutes, $4.10

Total cost: $8.95

New: Car to Wiehle-Reston East Metro station and Silver Line

Parking: $4.85 all day

Metrorail: $5.90

Total Cost: $10.75
