Traffic/transit tips: Metro work, Nats games and more

September 1, 2012

METRO WEEKEND WORK, SCHEDULE CHANGES

Metro, which will be running Sunday service on Sunday and Monday, will close at midnight both days. Also, Metro work will create delays. Trains are single-tracking on the Red Line (between Rhode Island Avenue and Fort Totten), Orange Line (between Stadium-Armory and Cheverly) and Blue Line (between Arlington Cemetery and Foggy Bottom). Add extra time to those trips.

GAMES AT NATIONALS PARK

The Nationals host the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday (at 1:35 p.m.) and the Chicago Cubs on Monday (at 1:05 p.m.). Expect heavy congestion on trains heading to and from the ballpark before and after the games as well as traffic around the area. A silver lining: No scheduled work on the Green Line.

MINIMUM AMOUNT FOR
SMARTRIP CARD; REBATE

Two SmarTrip changes took effect Saturday. You now need at least $1.20 on a SmarTrip card before you can enter the system. Also, if you register your card online from this point on, you can get a $3 rebate. (Cards will still cost $5.)

CLASSES RESUMING
ON TUESDAY

School opens Tuesday in Fairfax and Arlington counties and in Alexandria. Be prepared for extra congestion around schools, and be particularly cautious driving near schools and bus stops.

BRIDGE WORK
ON BEULAH ROAD

The Beulah Road bridge over Wolftrap Run in Fairfax County is being rehabilitated over the next few months. The Virginia Department of Transportation will reduce traffic to one lane beginning Wednesday so crews can repair abutments and bearings, among other tasks. The project should take until December.

COTTAGE STREET
PROJECT IN VIENNA

The Virginia Department of Transportation is reconstructing Cottage Street between Walker and Patrick streets in Vienna. This project, which will last until May, involves a new sidewalk, asphalt pavement and other changes. Cottage Street will be closed to thru traffic, which will be detoured around the work. Local traffic can still access the road.

HOV LANES’ RULES
LIFTED FOR HOLIDAY

HOV restrictions will be lifted on Interstate 66, Interstate 95 and Interstate 395 on Monday. The usual HOV restrictions will resume Tuesday. Also, the I-95/I-395 reversible lanes are northbound until 11 a.m. Tuesday.

RAMP FROM ROUTE 123 REOPENING IN TYSONS

The old ramp running from southbound Route 123 to westbound Route 7 will reopen at 5 a.m. Thursday now that tunnel construction in that area related to the Dulles Metro project has been completed.

OVERNIGHT CLOSURES ON LEESBURG PIKE IN TYSONS

Crews doing utility work will close the intersection of Leesburg Pike and Tyco Road/Westwood Center Drive on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. the next day. The intersection will also be closed from 9 p.m. until 9 a.m. Friday night and into Saturday. Thru traffic will be allowed on Leesburg Pike, but thru traffic on Tyco Road/ Westwood Center Drive will be detoured.
