Tysons Corner housing approved by Fairfax planning board

Fairfax County officials gave preliminary approval Wednesday for construction of five residential towers in Tysons Corner.

The Planning Commission recommended approval of a rezoning request by the McLean-based Georgelas Group. The project is the first redevelopment proposal to be considered under the county’s new urban building plan for Tysons. It goes to the Board of Supervisors Tuesday for a public hearing.

The buildings are part of the company’s Spring Hill Station project, encompassing 32 acres of residential, office and retail buildings planned near a future Metro rail stop at Leesburg Pike and Spring Hill Road.

Spring Hill Station will be “a departure from our more suburban past,” said Kenneth Lawrence, a planning commissioner representing the Providence District, which includes most of Tysons.

The first tower is a 26-story apartment building that could begin construction early next year, pending county approval. The other four are 20 stories each and include the relocation of a nearby fire and rescue station. In all of the buildings, 20 percent of the units will be reserved as affordable housing, a condition required by Fairfax’s urban building plan for Tysons.

Peter F. Murphy Jr., chairman of the Planning Commission, called the vote a “historic moment.”
