RICHMOND — A news report on the South Florida surgeon accused of providing free travel and underage prostitutes to Sen. Robert Menendez describes Terry McAuliffe, the Democrat running for Virginia governor, as one of the doctor’s “good friends.”
McAuliffe’s name came up in a Miami Herald article on Dr. Salomon Melgen, a prominent eye surgeon and major political donor accused of supplying the New Jersey Democrat with free trips to the Dominican Republic and underage prostitutes. The FBI raided Melgen’s offices this week. Menendez and Melgen deny the allegations.
The Republican Governors Association issued a news releasing noting McAuliffe mention in the Miami Herald article.
Patricia Goodman, Melgen’s former office administrator and personal assistant, told the paper that McAuliffe and Melgen were “good friends.”
“Goodman noted that Bill and Hillary Clinton vacationed at the doctor’s home in Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic, and that he became good friends with Terry McAuliffe, former Democratic National Committee chairman and co-chair of Clinton’s 1996 reelection campaign,” the article said.
“He [McAuliffe] used to go to Dr. Melgen’s home in Casa de Campo and play golf all the time,’’ Goodman told the paper.
McAuliffe is a former Democratic National Committee chairman and a close friend of the Clintons. His campaign confirmed that he had played golf with Melgen, but said he was unaware of any wrongdoing.
“Terry has no knowledge of any investigation into Salomon Melgen,” said McAuliffe spokesman Josh Schwerin. “If there was any wrongdoing, he needs to be held fully accountable for his actions.”
