House Republicans are calling for $31 million in new funding for school security as part of the chamber’s budget proposal being considered this weekend.
The plan includes the creation of a $30 million revolving fund for security infrastructure projects in Virginia schools. Under the proposals, schools would compete for grants of up to $100,000 per year for projects.

Also in the plan is $1.7 million for school resource officers. Additional funding for the resource officer initiative was among the recommendations of Gov. Robert F. McDonnell’s (R) task force on school safety, formed in the wake of December’s school shootings in Newtown, Conn.
Del. Beverly J. Sherwood (R-Winchester) said Friday that the funding proposals will provide schools with greater ability and flexibility to protect students and address growing concerns among parents and communities concerning school safety.
House and Senate committees are scheduled to hammer out amendments to the current two-year budget Sunday.
