SUV plunges off Memorial Bridge into Potomac
This story has been updated.
An SUV plunged from Memorial Bridge into the Potomac River Sunday night, the U.S. Park Police reported. The driver was injured.
The vehicle was headed east, toward the Lincoln Memorial end of the bridge , about 10 p.m. Sunday when the incident occurred.
After apparently leaving the roadway, the vehicle crashed through the barrier at the edge of the south or downstream side of the bridge, said Sgt. Paul Brooks, the Park Police spokesman.
He said the only person in the vehicle was taken to a local hospital with injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening.
The bridge was closed for several hours, Brooks said. It reopened around 2:30 a.m.
It was not clear why the vehicle left the roadway, or at what point it plunged into the water.
A curb separates the bridge roadway from sidewalks on either side. A stone railing that is about chest high runs along the bridge at the far edge of the sidewalk.
