Jay Fisette to be named chairman of Arlington Board

Jay Fisette will be chairman of the Arlington County Board in 2014, the fourth time he’s served in that position, the board announced Tuesday.

Fisette, who’s been on the County Board since 1998 and was its chairman in 2001, 2005 and 2010. Mary Hynes, who was board chairman in 2012, will serve as vice-chairman. The board rotates its leadership positions every year; Walter Tejada is stepping down from the 2013 chairmanship.

Fisette, former director of the Whitman-Walker Clinic of Northern Virginia, is best known for his support for environmentalism and human rights. He was a major contributor to the start of Capital Bikeshare. This year, he campaigned to discourage the use of plastic water bottles in the county.

He will be seated in the chairmanship position at the board’s traditional Jan. 1 meeting.
