Shuttleworth withdraws from Va. congressional race

A third candidate seeking the Democratic nomination for the Northern Virginia congressional seat of retiring Rep. James Moran (D) dropped out Wednesday, as former Navy fighter pilot Bruce Shuttleworth said he concluded he can’t win in the crowded race.

Shuttleworth’s withdrawal leaves seven candidates actively seeking to win the June 10 primary. State Del. Charniele Herring of Alexandria pulled out Wednesday and Satish Korpe, an entrepreneur, ended his campaign last week.

In a statement, Shuttleworth said polling data “shows too little runway” to win. He did not say if he is supporting one of the other candidates. The Virginia 8th congressional district covers Alexandria, Falls Church, Arlington County and part of Fairfax County. Six of the remaining candidates claim Alexandria as home; one is from Arlington.

Patricia Sullivan covers government, politics and other regional issues in Arlington County and Alexandria. She worked in Illinois, Florida, Montana and California before joining the Post in November 2001.
