Four local nonprofit groups were awarded a total of $90,000 in grants Wednesday night from The Washington Post and the McCormick Foundation to focus on educational opportunities for at-risk youths, the newspaper announced Thursday.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the National Capital Area got a $25,000 grant for their “Bigs In Schools” program, which offers one-on-one mentoring for D.C. public school students in the fourth to eighth grades.
Capital Partners for Education got $30,000 to help low-income high school students through mentoring and scholarships.
Everybody Wins! DC received a $25,000 grant to support their Power Lunch Program at Ross Elementary School, which offers reading mentors to students during a lunch hour each week.
And the George B. Thomas Sr. Learning Academy in Bethesda was given $10,000 for its Saturday School program, which offers tutoring and mentoring support for Montgomery County students.
