Washington’s summer of 2012: Love. Heat. Derecho. How was this summer different from any other? Here’s a look through the eyes — and lens — of Washington native Marvin Joseph, who tells The Post’s David Beard how ice packs and fire hoses saved broiling pets . . . and Girl Scouts.
Let's dance!
Austin Geithner, 20, uses his towel like a bullfighter's cape as he shuffles along the Ocean City boardwalk with Kaity Phelps, 20. Geithner came to Senior Week from Annapolis to ''kinda sorta'' keep an eye on his little sister, one of hundreds of recent high school graduates in town.

A whole summer before me
Jessica Oleksik looks lost in thought. The evening image of a graduating Annapolis, Md., senior -- the expression, the big hair -- struck Joseph as emblematic of a teen with many decisions before her.

When crustaceans meet
"The horseshoe crabs come up to the Delaware Bay each summer to mate, in the high tide, under a full moon. These crabs were right at my feet." Since prehistoric times, the shoreline has been the breeding epicenter of these crabs, which look like flattened Army helmets atop hairy red legs.

New year, same beach
Khaleem Washington, 10, Zanobea Ferguson, 9, and Kelis Corley, 9, enjoy their annual visit to Highland Beach, Md. The beach community was founded in 1893 by Charles Douglass, the son of abolitionist Frederick Douglass. The first black municipality in Maryland, it became a gathering place for upper-class blacks such as Paul Robeson, Booker T. Washington, Alex Haley, W.E.B. DuBois and Langston Hughes.

Evening in Georgetown
"It was hot as blazes, and this dude, Christian Warrior, was exercising at this Georgetown park without a shirt, shadow boxing, the light just before sunset falling, golden, across his chest.''

Derecho dogs
"The shelter [Washington Animal Rescue League] lost its power in the derecho, and they did a makeshift air-conditioning unit for the kennels -- they got blocks of ice and fans powered by generators. I saw one dog, Van Buren, getting a hose-down -- and he was loving it." The storm barreled through the D.C., Maryland and Virginia region, and hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses lost power.

Summertime surfing (on land)
Hot July temperatures didn't stop Rob Sale from wearing his tight zebra pants, from jumping into the audience, from doing a little crowdsurfing as he sang The Darkness's "I Believe in a Thing Called Love.'' Sale is a member of the karaoke team 99 Problems But Pitch Ain't One, which took first place in the Citywide Finals of District Karaoke.

Of bears and mustaches
A cute summer assignment, Joseph thought: Bear Happy Hour on an outside deck of a Washington hotel. "I got there and thought, 'Where are all the teddy bears?' And then I realized -- all these men, these hairy men -- it was THAT kind of Bear Happy Hour ...This guy [Jason Scott, at left]? I liked the mustache.''

Scarred, but still helping
"No pictures!'' yells Leah Lupo, 7, loving her ride on Infinity the horse in Herndon, Va. Joseph says the horse belongs to a nonprofit that helps kids with special needs. "I was there to photograph the horses. Some of them had been slashed by someone, but they still did their job helping others.'' An arrest was made in the slashings.

Sweltering? Not me!
“I'm from Southeast, Ward 8. ... It was a hot day, and we needed a weather shot. I didn't want a community pool ... I went walking and saw a woman putting air in the inflatable pool. The kids were waiting ... I love this [photo] because she looks so cool and relaxed on a summer day. It looks biblical.'' At left, Miracle Moody, 9, and her cousins in the Henson Ridge neighborhood.

Same pool. Pure joy. "Ah,'' Joseph says, ''to be their age again at that moment." Left, Sanaya Graham, 7, holds on tight to her duck float at her grandmother's backyard pool.

Summertime meetup with a hero
Joseph occasionally gets in the frame himself. "That's me this summer with Mrs. Ernestine Shepherd, who is in the Guinness World Records as the oldest competitive bodybuilder in the world. She's an inspiration to me.'' Now 76, the Baltimore grandmother has been photographed by Joseph several times over the past few years. She told The Post last year: "Believe it or not, I used to be a couch potato.''

"They told stories and jokes, out in the wild, just like Scouts have done for generations. The Scouts had eaten hot dogs. The grown-ups had smoked salmon. I mean, they smoked that salmon. What a dinner!"

The masked man played "Linus and Lucy"
The street musician calls himself Unknown Pianist 100. He performed the Charlie Brown theme before judges at the Metro headquarters one summer evening, seeking a shot to play outside Metro stops. "It was a competition, an open audition. Metro's Got Talent. I didn't realize we had so many people vying to play at Metro stops ... That Zorro get-up? That's his act.''

Also at the audition was a grinning Luke Reddick, who regularly performs in Alexandria. "This guy played harmonica and guitar. That seems so hard to do. I liked the smile.''

The music never stopped
It was a mellow moment during Senior Week in Ocean Beach, Md., when Joseph heard these Broadneck High School graduates -- and their guitar, bongo and ukulele. ''I can't remember what songs they were singing, but it WAS summer to me. It was like something from the ’70s." From left, very happy Girl Scouts Hanna Kirwin, 10, Emilie Bazzinotti, 10, and Cayla Tuff, 12, of Troop 6075 Lowell, Mass. ... An estimated 250,000 scouts, alums, parents and friends had gathered on the Mall for a singalong for the group's 100th anniversary. But they were sweltering, until the D.C. Fire Department helped out. “I was shooting the singalong and suddenly I heard screams. Not bad screams, screams like at a fair ...''

A Girl Scout makes the group's symbol with her fingers against a blue sky. It is also a symbol for love. "I love summer,'' Joseph says. "And this was a very busy summer for me.''
