A 25-year-old woman who was struck by a Prince William County police cruiser early Saturday morning has died from her injuries, authorities said Monday.
Police said that the incident occurred as an on-duty officer was responding to a report of an intoxicated woman walking in traffic in the area of Jefferson Davis Highway and Cardinal Drive in Woodbridge around 4:30 a.m. on Saturday.
As the officer crested a hill about one-third of a mile from the reported location, he saw the woman walking in his lane.
Officials said the officer, who was driving a marked police cruiser, tried to avoid the woman but was blocked by a truck in the lane to his right. He was unable to swerve out of the way or break in time, and struck the woman, they said. In a news release, police described the collision as inadvertent.
The woman, identified as 25-year-old Isabella Majano, of Woodbridge, was taken to an area hospital, where she died on Monday, officials said.
Police said Majano was under the influence of alcohol and was not in a designated crosswalk when she was struck.
The officer was not injured and no other vehicles were involved in the collision. Officials said speed was not a factor in the crash.
