A look at four NCAA bubble teams

Virginia (21-11)

The Cavaliers earned a bye in the ACC tournament, but they needed a Big East-style second bye to avoid that dismantling Friday at the hands of N.C. State. You can’t lose to George Mason, Delaware and Old Dominion this season and expect to be safe. The home win over Duke and victory at Wisconsin can only carry them so far.

Middle Tenn. St. (28-5)

Can a 28-win team really miss the NCAA tournament in a year with such a weak bubble? The Blue Raiders had won 17 straight before being shocked by Florida International in the Sun Belt tournament. Now, with no major quality wins to lean on (Mississippi is its best), MTSU will be right on the brink, and might be out of luck.

Boise St. (21-10)

The Broncos won five of their last six, including over Colorado State and San Diego State. But they missed a major opportunity when the Aztecs won the rematch in the Mountain West quarterfinals. Much like in the school’s recent football past, Boise State might be stuck watching while schools from bigger conferences take its spot.

MARYLAND (22-12)

That the Terps are even in this conversation is something of a miracle, as only their wins over Duke, including one in the ACC tournament, have given them any kind of shot. For the sake of undamaged property, it’s a good thing the Maryland students are on spring break, in case things go wrong. Or right.
