James Holmes appears in Arapahoe County District Court with public defender Tamara Brady in Centennial, Colo. Wearing a maroon prison jumpsuit, Holmes, 24, stared blankly ahead for most of the advisement, sometimes looking down or closing his eyes. Arapahoe County District Attorney Carol Chambers said that she had no information about whether Holmes was on medication during his initial appearance and that she could not explain his lack of emotion and apparent dazed look as the hearing unfolded. Asked whether she anticipated an insanity defense, Chambers replied: “I don’t know that we’re anticipating anything right now.”

Shooting suspect James Holmes sits with public defender Tamara Brady during his first court appearance in connection with last Friday’s massacre at a movie theater in Aurora, Colo. Twelve people were killed and 58 injured in the shooting, which took place during a midnight screening of the new Batman movie “The Dark Knight Rises.” Holmes has not been officially charged. The main purpose of Monday’s hearing, called an advisement, was to show the court that there is sufficient reason to continue holding Holmes without bail. The judge told Holmes there was “probable cause to believe you committed the offense of first-degree murder” and said he would continue to be held without bond.
